Why Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Is a Legal Requirement

A fire extinguisher that is empty, discharged, or past its service date is legally equivalent to having no fire extinguisher at all - and may result in non-renewal of your fire NOC. Under Rule 54 of the Gujarat Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act and the provisions of the Factories Act, all fire extinguishers on premises must be maintained in serviceable condition, tested, and recorded in a service register.

Frequently Asked Questions - Fire Extinguisher AMC

Find answers to common questions about fire extinguisher AMC services, refilling, hydrostatic testing, and GIDC coverage:

IS 2190 and most fire authority requirements specify annual inspection and servicing of all fire extinguishers. Hydrostatic pressure testing is required every 3 years for most types and every 5 years for CO₂ extinguishers. Service records must be maintained on-site.

Hydrostatic testing involves filling the extinguisher cylinder with water and pressurising it to 1.5× working pressure to check for leaks, cracks, or deformation in the cylinder shell. This test is required periodically to ensure the cylinder remains structurally safe under the pressures of normal use and refilling. Cylinders that fail hydrostatic testing must be condemned and replaced.

Yes. CO₂ extinguishers are specifically recommended for electrical equipment fires - they do not leave residue (unlike dry powder) and are non-conductive. They are the preferred type for server rooms, switch rooms, and electrical panels. Do not use water or foam extinguishers on live electrical equipment.

A fire extinguisher needs refilling if the pressure gauge reads in the red zone, if the safety pin has been removed and replaced (suggesting partial discharge), if the last service date is more than 12 months ago, or if any physical damage (dents, corrosion, blocked nozzle) is observed. When in doubt, have it serviced - a partially discharged extinguisher may fail to extinguish a real fire.

Yes. We provide fire extinguisher AMC services across Ahmedabad's industrial areas including GIDC Vatva, Naroda, Odhav, Changodar, and surrounding industrial estates. We manage scheduled servicing for multiple factories under a single AMC contract.
